Every once in a while, rumours pop up about Ford returning to Formula One.

What with the forthcoming engine spec change, we're going to see all manner of marques linked with F1 - brace yourself for the Delage rumours, the Hispano-Suiza spin, and the Invicta mutterings.

And why not? It's about as likely that we'll see any of those brands in F1 as it is the seemingly endless list of struggling car makers who have been associated with the sport in recent months.

If you do stumble across a Ford rumour, dismiss it immediately.

Not only do Ford have a less than successful F1 history, but the marque is currently struggling to fight its way back from a 29 percent decline in European sales from 2011. The average industry fall was 9 percent, less than a third of that reported by Ford.

Sounds like they're in a great place to start investing in a new motorsport venture, doesn't it?

What about the whispers regarding HRT and Mercedes..? Any more going down with that?

Nope, there's been total silence on that end since Budapest. TOTAL silence, which is odd...

I can pretend to have heard a Subaru rumour, just to start up discussions on Subaru's look at F1 ;)

As for Ford's less than successful history, their badge went very fast when attached to Cosworth engines (just a shame about everything else Ford have touched in F1) :)

I was thinking more about the early Jaguar days, as it's been a very long time since we've seen a decent Ford-Cosworth engine. But you're right, I should have been more obvious in my intention.

What other car companies can we falsely link to Formula One? Bagsy Humvee!

Nanjing Auto, racing under the MG Rover brand!

Ooh, good one! I want Team G-Wizz for Formula E.

The only time I've seen Ford and F1 in the same sentence recently was in F1 Racing, where in a passage about engine manufacturers who'd won lots of races, that Ford would come back to F1... ...some time after Armageddon.

In the DIY rumour mill, I'm bagsying Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (competing under the brand name Vovlo)...

You can definitely have Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. How about we start these rumours spreading, and the first one who has their rumour quoted back to them wins a chocolate medal (or similar)?

Diabetics are banned from choosing VW then ;)

Yeah, I'm not paying extra for diabetic chocolate! ;p
